How to choose a solar inverter
Quick answer
Choose an inverter that is big enough for everything you run at the same time, and pick hybrid if you want backup during load-shedding. Make sure the battery voltage matches, choose an IP65/IP66 model if it will be outdoors, and buy from an official dealer for warranty support.
1. Choose the right size (kW)
The inverter size is the most power it can give at one time. Add up what you run together, like fans, fridge and AC, and choose an inverter a little bigger than that. For example, a home running one 1.5 ton AC plus fans and a fridge usually needs around a 5 to 6 kW inverter.
2. On-grid or hybrid?
An on-grid inverter lowers your bill but switches off during load-shedding. A hybrid inverter works with a battery and gives backup. Read our guide on on-grid, off-grid and hybrid systems.
3. Match the battery voltage
Small inverters often use 12V or 24V batteries. Bigger ones use 48V (a 51V lithium battery). The inverter and battery must use the same voltage.
4. Indoor or outdoor? Check the IP rating
The IP rating shows protection against dust and water. An IP21 inverter should be installed indoors or in a covered place. An IP65 or IP66 inverter can handle dust and rain, so it can go outdoors. For example, the Itel Sparta 6.6 kW and the Knox Zapher 9.2 kW are IP66 models.
