Can solar run my AC?
Quick answer
Yes. A 5 kW solar system can usually run one 1.5 ton inverter AC in the daytime. For two ACs, you normally need 8 kW or more. To run an AC at night, you also need a big enough lithium battery.
How much power does an AC use?
A 1.5 ton inverter AC usually uses about 1 to 1.8 kW while cooling hard, and less once the room is cool. A non-inverter AC uses more power and starts with a big jump in load, so it is harder for solar to run.
Tip: if you are buying a new AC, choose an inverter AC. It works much better with solar.
What system size do I need?
| What you want to run in the daytime | Usual system size |
|---|---|
| Lights, fans, fridge, TV | 3 kW |
| All of the above + one 1.5 ton inverter AC | 5 kW |
| All of the above + two 1.5 ton inverter ACs | 8 kW |
| Three ACs or a big house | 10–12 kW |
These are simple guides. The right size depends on your other appliances too, like water motors, irons and washing machines.
Can solar run my AC at night?
Solar panels do not work at night. To run an AC at night, you need a hybrid system with a lithium battery. An AC uses a lot of power, so the battery must be big enough. A small battery may run an AC for only a short time.
Many families run ACs on solar in the day and use the grid at night, which keeps the battery cost lower.
What about cloudy days?
On cloudy or foggy days, panels make less power. With a hybrid or on-grid system, the grid covers the gap automatically, so your AC keeps running.
